Frequently asked questions.

Can I book a private tour?

Yes! In fact you can only book a private tour (we do not have public pre-scheduled biking or walking tours). We specialize in small, boutique tours for locals and visitors, and enjoy being able to curate tours to best fit your sightseeing preferences and schedule. We’ve found that having our enthusiastic customers reach out to us to specify any special sites, places, and schedule preferences make the best tour experience.

What days/times can I schedule a tour?

So long as there’s sunlight or twilight we’re ready to take you out! Please book your date with plenty of advance notice as popular times (holidays, Saturday mid-morning, and summer evenings) can fill up quickly.

Where do the tours start?

Meeting locations vary based on the tour; we coordinate meetup details with you ahead of time. We vary our meetup points to make sure the location works well for the tour, as well as for our customers, taking into consideration parking and travel time to the starting point.

Do I bring my own bike? Do you offer bike rentals?

This is a BYOB affair. (Someday we hope to have a fleet of bicycles available for use and a safe place to store them in the central Sacramento area… until then, we’re waiting for some nice investors to come knocking!).

Can I use a Bikeshare bike / rent a bike / borrow my roommate’s bike?

Sure! If you don’t own a bike and can rent one to join our tour that would be awesome! Note we are not responsible for fees, reservations, availability, damage, or really, anything having to do with your bike rental. Or with any trouble you may be in for not *technically* asking your roommate when you borrowed their bike.

Can I bring my e-bike? Can I bring a rented e-bike?

Yes! We offer tours via e-bike. Please drop us a line to let us know you are bringing an e-bike so that we can bring ours, too!

Are helmets required for bike tours?

UPDATE: YES. OUR INSURANCE POLICY REQUIRES THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS WEAR A BICYCLE HELMET. You will NOT be able to participate in ANY of our activities if you are not wearing a helmet.

Should I bring my own helmet for bike tours?

Yes! Please bring your own helmet. If you do not own a helmet, we recommend patronizing your local bike shop (contact us for recommendations) for a shiny new helmet to keep your skull safe and comply with our insurance policy! We have a small selection of helmets that we rent out for a small fee and keep sanitized.

Waiver

Yep, you need to sign a waiver. It’s here.  Please complete this waiver prior to your scheduled tour or session.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards, cash, Venmo, and as a last resort, checks*. If you book online, we require a credit card to hold your booking reservation.

*Generation Z: this is a check

What should I bring with me on my tour?

Please bring a water bottle! Also: your bike, your helmet, and a form of payment. Please make sure your waiver is completed prior to the tour.

What’s your cancellation policy?

There is a $5 cancellation fee if cancelling less than 2 days before your scheduled tour or session.

If you are ill* or have a sudden emergency, we are more than happy to reschedule your tour or class without additional fees. Please do not attend a tour if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 / coronavirus.

*Serious. Please do not show up to a tour or proceed with a private class if you are ill, especially if you have a fever, cough, or other infectious disease (cough cough, COVID-19), sore throat, broken leg, etc. We would be happy to reschedule your session when you are feeling well and happy!

What about cancellations due to weather?

Smoke, pouring rain, temperatures in excess of 100 degrees, or extreme wind = cancellation and full refund. If there’s a slight/light/manageable drizzle, or a slightly hazy/smoky day with lower AQI levels, we’re happy to power on, or cancel with a full refund, depending on your comfort level. Tours occurring during times where the temperature is expected to be over 100 degrees are cancelled at the customer’s request with a full refund.

What kind of shape do I need to be to join a tour?

You do not need to be fast! We adjust our speed based on the group’s desire and ability. Your should be in good physical health, be comfortable riding your bike, know basic rules of the road, understand how to navigate the streets with other pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, and be able to follow verbal instructions. If this isn’t you, then please attend one of our Biking with Confidence sessions before signing up for a tour.  We also have mini sessions that can be included as an add-on to any of our tours or guided commutes if you need a refresher.

Is there an age requirement?

No. There are no age requirements for our biking and walking tours.

What can I expect on a tour?

Expect some amazing historical and personal stories from our guides on your tour of Sacramento. We’ll stop for photo opportunities (our guides love taking photos!).  Our seasonal and super special tours often include an expert in the topic at hand (e.g., we like to bring a local ornithologist on our birding bike tours, a local coffee roaster for our coffee tour, etc.).

Before we begin each tour, we’ll go over the the length and the route, conduct a quick safety check on your bike, review hand signals and rules of the road, answer any questions you may have, and identify any sights you’re super excited to see :)

I’m worried the tour might be too long/too hard/too advanced. How do I know if a tour is right for me?

If you’re worried about ANYTHING - please call, text, or email us - we’d be happy to do an informal assessment of your comfort level, your physical abilities, the condition of your bike, etc. We’re more than happy to modify the length or number of stops on ANY tour to best meet your needs at no additional charge to you. We pride ourselves on offering a curated experience to ensure your tour is fun and enjoyable!

What do I need to do to avoid getting kicked off a tour?

KEEP YOUR HELMET ON YOUR HEAD.

Also, please do not: interrupt our tour guides when they are speaking; try to race our tour guides (seriously?); or, complain about the weather (we’ve tried - we can’t change the weather). Please do not take selfies while actively engaged in riding a bike or actively walking (just holler – we are happy to stop safely for the perfect Instagram shot). Please do not engage in rude or aggressive behaviors on (or off) your bike. Please do not ride a bike without a helmet (this is strictly forbidden and against our insurance policy. You MUST wear a helmet while riding your bike at all times on our tours and during our sessions.) Please do not engage in unsafe or dangerous behaviors (e.g., not following the rules of the road). Please do not sign up for a bike tour if it’s been several years since you’ve ridden a bike/touched your bicycle – please sign up for one of our Biking with Confidence sessions first so that you can fully enjoy a tour!

Should I tip my guide(s)?

Gratuity is not included in our fees. Tips are not expected but always welcome!

I would like to be a tour guide.

THAT IS AWESOME. We  love partnering with people to provide special tours! We’re always looking for guest tour guides to help lead cultural, historical, architectural, foraging, birding, wildflower, and wildlife viewing tours. We’re open to all ideas! Please contact us to discuss opportunities and details.

I have an idea for a tour I want to take!

Sweet. We’d love to research and guide a special tour for you! Please contact us to tell us your idea. Pricing is similar to our normal tour rates.

UPDATE: What precautions are you taking with COVID-19?

Prior to your tour, if you or anyone in your group are showing any symptoms of COVID-19 or other communicable diseases we will reschedule or cancel and fully refund your tour at no additional cost to you. Please call, text, or email us directly if you have any specific questions or requests regarding COVID-19.

Thank you for ensuring your safety and ours!
